How to Transfer a Domain From GoDaddy to Hostmonster?

July 24th, 2009 · 2 Comments · Domain, How to, Web Hosting

I’ve successfully transferred learningwp.com – the current blog domain from GoDaddy to Hostmonster.com a while ago. Since many people are interested in how each step was being processed, I think it is necessary to write them down before my memory is faded. It is also good reference for myself if one day I want to do it again.

I ordered this domain at GoDaddy.com back in September, 2008. However, GoDaddy would not allow me to transfer my domain within 60 days. Since I also ordered five other domains to take advantage of getting Free private registration, because of that it made it so hard for me to transfer my domain from GoDaddy.

I had to call GoDaddy‘s support hotline, someone helped me get the user-id so that I could login to Domains By Proxy to disable the private protection on learningwp.com.

After that I logged in to my GoDaddy.com account, go to MY PRODUCTS ->Domains->Domain Manager, a new window will pop-up.

  • Click on the active domain link you wish to transfer.
  • On the top menu, click on Nameservers and change server 1 and server 2 to be Hostmonster.com nameservers and click on OK. See screenshot below:
  • set_nameservers

  • Then make sure you unlock your domain.
  • Set Auto Renew to be manual instead of auto-renew.
  • Then click on Refresh Page.
  • Before you click on Send by Email about your Authorization Code, double check to ensure you have an updated email (very important). See screenshot below for these details:
  • domain_information

  • Next step is to login to Hostmonster.com. If you don’t have an account yet, now it is the best time to sign up since it is offering $4.95/month. I don’t know how long this offer will last. However, if you have other web host, your cpanel might look a little bit difference than mine.
  • On the top menu, click on Domain Manager.
  • Under Shortcuts, click on Transfer a new domain to your account.
  • Enter the domain you want to transfer and click on Continue button.
  • Next you need to enter Epp authorization code that you’ve got earlier in email from GoDaddy.com and click on Continue button.
  • Then click on Add to Cart button.
  • Make sure you also turn on the Free private protection. No charge.
  • Lastly you just have to wait for GoDaddy to send you an email of notification about your transfer.

Please be aware that Domain Name System (DNS) usually takes 24 to 48 hours to propagate. The whole process should take about 7 days. In my case it took 5 days.
